Coupons offer a discount to customer while clearly marking a higher regular price. They limit the number of discount purchases repeat buyers can make, and they can be distributed in a manner that increases the probability that only first time buyers will use them. They can also make buyers aware of a product that is not yet stocked and put pressure on stores to place an order.
